Welcome.jpg

Our church functions under the leadership and direction of Pastor Small. Members may volunteer to serve on any group, or may be elected such as for the Church Council. All roles function to enhance our worship and strengthen our faith so we can then share the love of Jesus by serving our neighbors and community. For example, the Church Council oversees the business functions of the church, some having very specific duties such as Treasurer. The Elders function as spiritual counselors for the congregation and aid the Pastor in serving and shepherding. The Altar Guild members take care of setting up the altar and sanctuary for the worship services, including communion, baptisms, and special services. The Board of Trustees take care of the facility and grounds attached to the church. In addition, specific members share their skills such as the pianists who are there for every service, and the church secretary who oversees the office duties. They all comprise the leaders of our church.

David Small

Pastor

Pastor Small lives in Medford with his wife and their daughters, and has been Pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church since August 2018. A product of Lutheran elementary and high schools in Phoenix, Arizona, Pastor Small attended Valparaiso University, graduating in 2005. He had long wanted to follow in his grandfather’s steps to serve in the U.S. Air Force and was commissioned after completing the Air Force ROTC program. He served as a Space and Missiles Officer in Minot, ND and Colorado Springs, CO.

As he was discerning a career after the Air Force, Pastor Small recalled the influential Pastors throughout his childhood and young adulthood and their suggestion that he attend Seminary and become a Pastor himself. He enrolled at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in 2018, and received his call to be ordained and installed as Pastor at Calvary Lutheran Church in Medford, NJ.

Pastor Small continues to be an aviation and astronomy enthusiast (he can often be seen looking at the skies!) and is a baseball fan, cheering for the Philadelphia Phillies, except when they play the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Dave Potts

President, Church Council

The role of the President of the Church Council is to manage the church business functions, such as managing renovations and repairs, hiring help, and overseeing completion of contractual work. Dave has served in many roles over his decades of membership at Calvary, all of which have added knowledge which allows him to better serve the congregation as President. He welcomes the Sunday activities including Bible Study, worship, coffee hour, and time to visit with others. Such interactions allow him to hear from other members about ongoing or needed programs and initiate action to resolve them. He is committed to his faith and to his duties at Calvary and to managing the business to permit Pastor to focus on leading members on their spiritual journey.

Carol Dennis

Altar Guild Chair

Altar Guild members provide a spiritual commitment to Calvary’s place of worship, serving fellow members by making sure it is maintained and set up for the times and seasons of the Church Year. As a long-time member of Calvary, Carol values the welcoming community of Calvary’s members and growing new members and families. She is a skilled leader, whose leadership style garners the respect and commitment of fellow Guild members to serve with excellence.

Doug Davidson

Elder

The role of an Elder is to assist Pastor with the Lord's Supper and baptisms, to set an example in the congregation, and to aid in the spiritual life of the congregation. This can include keeping the pulse of the congregation and giving feedback to Pastor- both positive and negative. An Elder helps hold the Pastor accountable and meets him to discuss spiritual needs of the congregation, such as a change in liturgy or communion. Worship style and friendliness of the congregation were a major draw for me in joining this church. I also aligned with the church’s understanding of Biblical authority. The worship style at Calvary is very familiar and welcoming.

Eric Lathrop

Elder

My role as Elder is to approach (i.e.: be sensitive to opportunities to help the church body) while being approachable (e.g.: being prepared to take in the thoughts, cares, and concerns of others). What I like about Calvary is its faithful clarity, wholesome doctrine and the Good News message of belief in the Pascal sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus, and the hope it affords contrite sinners- like me.

Joe Janco

Elder

My role as Elder is to assist Pastor Small in whatever functions he thinks I can perform (communion, reading, baptism, etc.). I like all the people at Calvary and talk with everyone. Calvary is a great place to worship and I look forward to every Sunday being with friends.

Nils Haughland

Elder

My current role as an Elder is to help the Pastor and work as a go between the Pastor and the Congregation. What I like about this church is that it feels like an extended family.  Everyone is always so friendly and helpful.  We seem to rally around challenges and celebrate the wins that come after.

Calvary is a very friendly place, I enjoy worship and other activities, and the service is meaningful to me. It provided strength during tough times. I love our church family and appreciate the chance to serve here.

What I like about Calvary is that everyone here makes me feel like I’m part of a family. I’m happy to donate my time and talent providing musical accompaniment on the piano during the worship service.
